Recently I bought a UPS 2442 printer on eBay in hopes of setting up a print station for my eBay shipping. I found that there are a few people that get the printer working and many that have questions and are unsuccessful.

The LP2442 is the least expensive unit I have seen and is a great workhorse! (or should I say WorkZebra)

I finally got mine working in Windows 7 so I'll try and document what I did here. I'll be installing the printer on my XP machine but it will be about the same procedure for Windows 7.

I guarantee you will save $5 worth of time when you set up your printer! Feel free to email me. Enjoy!

Hardware:
1. Purchase a USB to Centronics printer adapter on ebay. Don't pay more that $5 for one. They ship directly from China and should be in your hands within 2 weeks. Make sure you get the one with the Centronics connector and not the DB25!!

2. Plug your adapter in the back of your printer.

Now you have a USB Zebra printer!!

Power up your Zebra! You should seen the area around the green button on the top light up.

3. Follow the users manual to make sure the printer will print a test.
Use the LP 2443 manual as a reference.

Software:
4. Next we need a printer driver!

If your running Windows 7 64Bit then you will need a 64 Bit driver our you will probably get an error message when you try to install the 32 bit driver. See below.

Error: The environment specified is invalid.

There are a few places to get a print driver. Lets look at that next.

Zebra did not have a 64 Bit Driver available that I saw. There is an older 32 bit driver for the LP 2443 but you can't easily use it in Windows 7.

4. Seagull Scientific provides many thermal printer drivers and they let you download them for free! They also off a professional Bar code printer software program that they will let you test drive for a few weeks. I used Bartender to test my Seagull driver install and verify my printer worked. I was not able to complete my ebay / PayPal setup before I did using this next source. Maybe you will have more success.
5. Next lets talk about NiceLabel.com

I was able to use this driver with Windows 7 64bit and was successful in printing labels! Click then link to the right to get to their web page.

6. Download the Zebra Driver

I had trouble downloading the driver so beware. I'm not sure if my Anti-Virus software flagged it as a virus or not but I only got a fraction of the file before Windows reported that the file was completely downloaded. I emailed NiceLable and they were nice enough to send me the file. I finally was able to download the file too after multiple attempts. Send me an email if you get stuck on downloading the file.

7. Installing the driver:

Plug the USB cable from the Zebra printer into an available USB port on your computer.

Important!!: Make note of what port you plug into!!! You may need to plug the printer back in that port next time to make it work again.

In Windows XP, the "USB Printing Support" now shows up in the Hardware Manager.

Note: I didn't have to install a driver for the USB/ Centronics cable. Windows just took care of it.

8. Start the driver install:

Click on the Zebra.exe file you downloaded
(or unzip it if it's a zip file)

Click "Run"

9. click "OK"
10. Click Unzip. Note where it puts the unzipped files.
11. Click "OK"
12. Click "Next>"
13. "Click I Accept..." then "Next >"

14. Select the Zebra LP 2443 printer (even if you have the LP 2442 !!) then click "Next >"

.

15. Scroll up to the USB001 port. This port should show up once the USB / Centronics cable is properly installed! If you don't see it, don't continue because something went wrong!

Leave the name of the printer alone "Zebra LP 2443" and then finally click "Next >"

Information:

1. If you have more than one USB printer port plugged in or possibly your printer is interfaced to your PC via USB then you may see a different port number. Make sure you get the correct port number for your Zebra!!

2. You may have to reboot your PC if you select the incorrect port and fix it later.

16. I left the box unchecked. But here are the instructions if you want to run their tool. Click "Finish"

17. The driver will now complete installation!

18. Open your "Printers and Faxes" window and you should see the new Zebra LP 2443 !!!

Hey what's that Snagit 9 printer?? (it's not related but it's the tool I used to mark up my screen captures!)

Setting the default print on the Zebra!
19. Open the "Printers and Faxes" window and then right click on the line / icon and select Printing Preferences from the drop down menu. You should see the window below.

20. Next lets set up the "Stocks". I think this refers to the paper stock. I'm running 4x6 inch labels in my printer.

Click "New..."

21. Define the Stock as shown to the right then click "OK".

22. Click the Options Tab.

Select the "4x6 Marks" stock.
Then click the "Dithering" Tab.

23. Click "None".

Click "Apply"

24. Optional. Save the printer setup by clicking on the "Import/Export settings" tab.

25. Here is a screen capture of all the tabs for comparison.

26. Wrapping it all up:

Click the "OK" button and your defaults are now set.

Properties Check

27. Open the Printers and Fax page.

Right mouse click on the Zebra LP 2443 and then select Properties.

28. This is a complete screen shot of all the panels in the Properties window. You probably do not need to change anything.

29. Click the "General" tab and then print a test page. Click "Yes" on the pop up box to tell Windows that everything printed.

Printing from ebay!
30. Log into your ebay account.

Click the Summary tab.

Scroll down to the selling reminders.

I need to ship two items! Click the "2 Items" text.

31. Scroll down to the Sold section and click "Print shipping label"

32. A new window will pop open.

Select your package weight and look over all the other options.

Make sure the Zebra LP2844-Z 4x6 is selected even though you don't have that model!!

33. Click Pay and Print

Note: I had to press that button twice before a new window got launched.

34. This window should only pop up once. Check the box and the click "Run"

35. But wait, there's another pop up!

This on seem to pop up each time you print a label.

Check the box and then click "OK"

36. And yet another window pops up.

Make sure the Zebra LP 2443 is highlighted.

37. CLICK THE "Print Label" button!!!

38. If all goes well, your label should look as good as mine below! (except for the stuff I tried to hide)

39. Click the "Return to Ebay" text and your done!

Happy shipping!
